Folks are still in the mindset of “producing” waste. We are kings and queens in this country; we have our own little waste cans, lined with plastic bags, that we feel obliged to fill up each day, only to have people come around and pick it up for us at the end of the day. I have had the privilege to appeal to our staff on how they can recycle and be good stewards of the environment. Here is one to share.

Carry the waste from your breakfast or lunch to the main containers in common areas such as the kitchen. the walk to the kitchen is good exercise and I use small paper bags inside my waste container for non-food items such as napkins, Kleenex, and paper towels. When this bag is filled I deposit it myself in the common container. Cleanup crews are trained to pull plastic in your container and replace it with a clean one. Saves a plastic bag from going to the landfill. I rarely or ever have my plastic “pulled.”

Im wondering how do you warm up your lunch at work with your stainless still bento box? I have a plastic bento box but its starting to fall off im ill soon switch it to a stainless still one but I cannot microwave it … do you only bring salad/wrap like food that don’t need to be warmed up?

xx

I had countless coworkers give me a hard time about the container of compostables sitting on my desk. I found the old style water bottles made for a great second life as a compost container and they weren’t breakable. I am always on the hunt for new ideas and products. I really like the bamboo coffee cup.

Yes you can! I know what you mean because it can be difficult for me too when I visit certain parts of Florida. Continue to stay positive and confident that you can be zero-waste regardless where you are, it just may require more foresight and effort. You got this.

I love your article and thanks for the mention! The more eco-minded individuals united at work the better.

Thanks so much for this post! It inspired me to write one of my own about my office in hopes of encouraging my coworkers (and myself!) – http://allisonmessimer.com/2017/11/05/eco-friendly-tips-office/

Thanks again – keep up the great work!
