Most conventional hot chocolate comes in disposable single-use, plastic-lined, and non-recyclable paper packages. Not to mention, the ingredients are often difficult to pronounce and usually contain hydrogenated vegetable oils, modified corn syrup, and lots of processed sugar.

If you’re looking to cozy up to a warm wintery drink, this is my favorite Zero Waste hot chocolate recipe. It’s just as simple to make as the packaged, processed version, but eliminates the waste!

1 cup of plant-based nut milk of your choice

1 bar of Tony Chocolonley (I prefer their 70% dark chocolate bar, but you can use whichever chocolate you like best!)

Dash of spice and herbs like cinnamon, nutmeg, and fresh mint (optional)

Mug

Saucepan

Instructions

  1. Cut up the chocolate bar into smaller pieces and place them into a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add in the milk and whisk together until the chocolate is fully melted and blended together.
  3. If you’d like, add in a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or some fresh mint for a refreshing peppermint flavor.
  4. Serve in a mug and enjoy! Best served with a holiday movie of your choice.

Why plant-based milk?

According to a University of Oxford study, producing one glass of dairy milk every day for a year requires 7,000 square feet of land (aka the size of two tennis courts!)—which is more than 10 times as much land required to make the same amount of oat milk. Overall, nut milk requires less water, energy, and land to make compared to dairy milk.

Why Tony Chocolonley?

Tony Chocoloney‘s packaging is FSC certified recycled paper, and they use non-alcoholic and plant-based inks, which means the wrappers can be composted afterward! They are also a 100% slave-free chocolate company on a mission to end modern slavery and illegal child labor in the cocoa industry! Psst. If you want to get more involved with their mission, you can signup to become Serious Friends with Tony’s and they’ll send you tools, videos, and more information on their ongoing work and how you can help.
